If you’re new to Bend, one of the first questions you may be asking is, “How close is the preschool to our home?”
After nearly 20 years of partnering with families in Bend, Oregon, we’ve learned that location certainly matters, but it’s worth looking at the bigger picture.
One of the things many families notice after moving here is how easy Bend is to get around, at least when construction isn’t factored in. While a drive across town might take 15–20 minutes, many daily trips are much shorter. If you’re coming from a larger city, what initially feels “far away” often becomes part of a very manageable routine.
As you compare preschools, we encourage you to think beyond the next year or two.
If you’re buying a home or planning to stay in Bend long term, it can be helpful to explore the elementary, middle and high schools in the surrounding area as well. Before long, your family’s schedule may include school events, concerts, sports practices, games, birthday parties and friendships that naturally center around that part of town.
Choosing a neighborhood is often about much more than where your child will attend preschool.
Of course, location is only one piece of the puzzle. We also encourage families to ask:
- Does this school’s philosophy align with our family’s values?
- Do the teachers seem experienced and supported?
- Will my child feel safe, known and encouraged here?
- Can I picture my family being part of this community?
You might also consider how preschool fits into your everyday routine. Is it close to work, a grocery store, your gym, library or another stop you already make? Sometimes a school that looks a little farther on the map fits naturally into your day.
Every family’s priorities are different, and there isn’t one right answer. Some families choose a preschool because it’s just around the corner. Others are happy to drive a few extra minutes for a program that feels like the best fit for their child.
Our hope is simply that families choose the school they feel most confident in, not just for convenience today, but for the experience they’ll have at our school in the years to come.
