Five Favorite Books for Preschoolers: A Peek Inside Our School Library

If you’ve spent much time at School of Enrichment, you’ve probably seen Miss Kara wearing a lot of different hats.
For the past nine years, she has been an important part of our school community, serving as our Assistant Director, managing our facilities, and jumping into the classroom whenever we need her. She’s also our unofficial school-wide librarian—a role that feels especially fitting given her longstanding love of children’s literature.
And she doesn’t just love children’s books professionally. At home, she’s also a mom to a preschooler and a first grader, so she has plenty of opportunities to test her favorite books with two very discerning little readers!
We asked her to share five of her favorite books for preschool-aged children. Her list is a wonderful mix of books that encourage perseverance, imagination, kindness, curiosity, and a little bit of silliness.
📚 The Magical Yet by Angela DiTerilizzi
A wonderful reminder that just because a child can’t do something yet doesn’t mean they won’t. This book celebrates persistence and the magic of growing, learning, and trying again.
📚 I Wish You More by Amy Krouse Rosenthal
A beautiful book filled with heartfelt wishes for children—more wonder, more courage, more laughter, and more joy. It’s one of those books that feels just as meaningful to the grown-up reading it as it does to the child listening.
📚 A Good Thing Happened Today by Michelle Figueroa
A sweet story that encourages children to notice and celebrate the good things happening around them. It’s a lovely reminder that even ordinary days can hold something worth appreciating.
📚 What Would You Do in a Book About You by Jean Reidy
This interactive, imaginative book invites children to think about themselves as the main character. It’s playful, engaging, and perfect for sparking conversations about choices, possibilities, and what makes each child unique.
📚 Don’t Trust Fish by Neil Sharpton
And, of course, every great preschool book collection needs a little silliness! This one is funny, unexpected, and sure to get kids engaged in the story.
One of the things we love most about having someone who genuinely loves children’s literature in our school is the way books become part of everyday life—not just something we read at circle time. The right book can help a child work through a big feeling, wonder about something new, see themselves in a story, or simply laugh with a teacher and a friend.
And when your school librarian is also your Assistant Director, facilities manager, substitute teacher, and a mom of two young children, you can be pretty confident that she knows a good preschool book when she finds one! If Kara isn’t here working, she’s often celebrating life with her family, walking through the woods, or shopping at Roundabout Books in Bend!
Happy reading from all of us at School of Enrichment!
